I stood in the back kitchen as I hummed along to the music that played on the radio that sat on the table. All while I worked with my machine, I watched as it filled the containers, often level to make sure we didn't get air bubbles. Once It was full, I made sure the top was nice and level while it also had some mild design, I turned off the machine and set the containers on the tray. I wheeled the tray into the freezer. I packed each tray into its place and labelled it with the sharpie from my pocket. I jumped a little as I heard the bell on the front door, so I added the last tray of double swivel bubble gum to the shelf and I left the freezer, I made sure to shut it behind me as I left the back kitchen. I Made my way into the main shop, light lavender walls, white accents, the small tables stacked up with their chairs ready for the morning, the cabinet empty and the light turned off. The windows with the view to the street the lights shining across the road and the snow fluttering softly onto the already heavily covered streets. I saw a girl stood in the middle of the shop. She looked about my age, in a pair of little black boots, Black tights, a grey sweater dress, a long green coat with black fluffy hems, and her long hair in a sweet braid full of glitter that seemed to litter behind her. "Hello!" she smiled doing a little spin to face me. "Uhhh hi," I answered a little concerned but kinda smiling at the same time, "I'm sorry, did you not see the sign? we're closed. I was about to start locking up," "Oh… I'm sorry, Guess I was just a little too excited," she giggled, "It's okay, take your time I'm not in a big rush," "Ohh thank you!" she giggled "What is this magical place?" she smiled with such a sweet infectious innocent joy. "Uhhh My shop," "Shop." she giggled "I've not been in a shop before, What do you have at this little shop?" "Ohh well, we make custom ice cream, we hand bake cookies and cupcakes, we also do chocolate covered strawberries they are lovely, and we do milkshakes, milk tea, and hot chocolate which is very popular this time of year," I explained. "Ice cream!" she giggled, "You must be the ice cream boy!" "Uhh yeah, I guess," "Could I try some ice cream?" "Uhhhh… sure I think I have a bit of strawberry and chocolate," I answered going over to the little freezer where we stored the little paper tubs for people to buy and take home with them "Yeah I have one left" I told her "Ohh I don't have any money" she said "Oh, well it's okay I'd have to get rid of it after Tuesday anyway don't worry about it." I told her as I handed it over "Really?" "yeah, happy holidays miss" "Aww thank you" she smiled taking it and a little wooden spoon "Ummmmmm" she smiled "it's delicious, thank you" she giggled "Your welcome," "Y/n" She smiled offering her hand "Jake, I uhh I've not seen you around here before" "New to town. but I think you will be seeing me fairly often" she smiled "See you around" "Yeah see you" I smiled as she happily scampered off into the snow with her ice cream.

I think I'm going to make a Sioux-Chef-inspired dessert this week, because while it's a beautiful book full of delicious food, I think the desserts could be uhhhh better

In keeping with the ethos of the book, I'm going to avoid dairy and refined flour/sugar, and I'm going to let indigenous flavors and ingredients carry the dish (but I might add just a little bit of flour, baking powder, and/or eggs to help with texture/structure)

Here's what I'm picturing:

Aronia berry ice cream, made with aronia berries from my garden and some kind of nut milk (hazelnut?)

A corn cookie based on the corn cookie recipe from the book, but with a little bit of egg/flour/baking powder. I might also cook the cornmeal into a mush before adding it to the recipe (this will take some experimentation). I'm also going to use the purple cornmeal from my garden, and stamp the cookie with a little cookie stamp that I haven't gotten to use yet

Since I'm planning on doing a more-or-less traditional custard-based ice cream, I'll have a couple of egg whites left over, which I'll turn into a little decorative crispy meringue garnish.

I did ask myself "is it presumptuous for me to try and 'improve' the sweet recipes in the book using European pastry techniques? Am I being an asshole?" but like, after studying the book and understanding the reasons why he did certain things, I feel like I'm in an okay position to "break the rules" respectfully. Basically, Chef Sherman is brilliant, but he's not a pastry chef. And it's BECAUSE I have so much respect for him and his food ethos that I'm inspired to make a dessert based on his work (but utilizing the arts and sciences that I learned from my own ancestors)

is there a baking fiasco? yes. every year. jane successfully bakes a million cookies, but every year, when she thinks she has enough to hand out a good dozen cookies to each and every person that works at their theater, she finds the other queens passed out in the living room with Elf on, cookie crumbs evident on their clothing and empty glasses that once held milk. 

she went to the LiWs’ house once to try to bake again, only to find herself in the same situation. 

jane thought it might be fun to do elf on the shelf, even though the others know that the parents move the elf. so, she bought one for kitty and one for anne. she found them in the fireplace the next day. when asked about it, katherine mumbled something along the lines of, “listen. at least we didn’t chop their heads off.” at the same time, anne “guessed” that “that’s what the elves wanted i guess”

they try to do ugly sweater contests, but they all think that even the “ugliest” sweaters are adorable

around the holidays, tickets are HEAVILY discounted if you promise to bring canned goods to the theater to donate to those who need some help around the holidays- anna’s idea

the queens get extremely competitive about their gingerbread houses. two teams: the first three against the last three (aragon immediately complains that they have “hurricane anne” on their team. cathy retorts with “you might have one big hurricane, but i have cleves and kat who are two tropical storms.” it’s pretty even in the end.) they end up spending WAY too much time on these, and they make the stage managers judge their houses (more like castles). 

cleves makes the best hot chocolate... her secret is that she puts a square of german chocolate at the bottom of each mug to melt into the regular hot chocolate. none of the others have discovered her trick- much to jane’s disappointment.

funnily enough, catherine is the one to insist on watching each and every christmas movie they can get their hands on

they argue over whether Die Hard is a christmas movie or not

decorating the tree is always an event in itself. they keep the “chaos tree” in the living room while catherine and jane decorate another tree in their other sitting room that is considered a bit more traditional (it has an angel on the top of it instead of a bottle of hairspray... anne’s idea)

they drive around a lot and look at the various light displays people have put out. 

it drives jane nuts when people mix different sorts of lights.

door decorating contests... team “divorced, died, survived” versus team “CHAOTIC 3″ versus “the band” (yes, they all came up with their own team names). every employee at the theater has to vote. the first team’s is a beautiful display. the second team’s is a mesh of all sorts of things, some not even christmas related. and the third is a bunch of santas playing various instruments. each team “wins” for different reasons. they never state who is the overall winner.

throughout december, they buy presents, wrap them and place them under the tree. by christmas eve, the bottom half of the tree is covered by six piles of gifts- one pile for each queen.

on christmas eve, after they’ve done secret santa, jane and catherine corral their “children” into going to the christmas eve church service with them. anna falls asleep every year within the first 15 minutes. 

they track santa when they get home

 catalina reads “the night before christmas”. They never make it to the end because everyone but jane gets lulled to sleep by her voice. the two carry the others to bed before turning in for the night themselves. 

and on christmas morning, it isn’t anne or kat who is up first looking forward to opening presents like most think... it’s actually cathy. banging pots and pans until everyone else comes downstairs and gathers by the tree.

jane always cries because she is so happy that she gets to spend her holidays with her family, although later she does cry because she wishes the children could be there to share in her delight.

It was dark. Well, of course, it was dark, it was two in the morning. Now any normal person would think, hey maybe it would be a good idea to be asleep, but if you couldn’t tell the girl sitting on the ground in the middle of her dorm wasn’t exactly normal as you would say. She had given up sleep, as the melatonin bottle on her table was empty and it was too late to go buy more then.

I mean what kind of normal person would go out in the middle of the night and buy melatonin if they weren’t a druggy?

At least that made some sense in her mind. Her straight brown bangs seemed to get in her way every time she moved, but it’s not like she could do anything about it. All the words seemed to jumble in her brain as she struggled to get the words to appear on the screen of her old beat up laptop. She found out the hard way you couldn’t just stare at the screen and make the words show up, just like she found out the hard way she should have finished this at least two days before it was due instead of five hours.

She spread out of the carpet further pushing the coffee table back making some of the k-cups stacked on there fall over. She sighed, but didn’t bother to pick them up taking another sip of coffee.

After a while of what you could barely call progress Sniper heard a loud crash come from the dorm next to her. She tried to go back to work after that, but couldn’t once she heard yelling from through the wall.

Sniper threw on her little shop of horrors hoodie and went out to see what was going on in the dorm next to her.

“Well i don’t KNOW blink, what SHOULD i do!” Sniper was about to softly knock on the door but stopped when she heard yelling. Someone on speaker phone was muffled out by the person dropping what seemed to be a large tray. “I don’t have any butter.” then a long sigh “would margerin work?”

Sniper finally just knocked.

“Oh shit, ONE SECOND!” they called out.

Sniper was met at the door by a small person, no taller than 5’1”. Their dark brown hair was a mess and they had a obnoxious pink baking apron on. Theyhad flour all over his cloths, and peaking in Sniper could see complete chaos in the small kitchen area provided in the dorms. Milk was spilled everywhere and flour was on every surface available.

“Who’s there?” a voice asked from the boys phone sitting on the counter, who Sniper assumed was blink.

“Uhhhh, what your name?” they asked quietly.

“Everyone just calls me sniper.”

“My, um, friend Sniper!” they told them.

“You sound real sure of that smalls.” the man on the phone jokes.

“Shut up and read me the next part of the recipe.”

“Do you need help or. . ?”

“Oh!” it was as if smalls had just realized sniper was still standing there “yeah if you really want.”

“Well, i’ve got nothing better to do” sniper lied taking the apron that smalls had handed out to them.

Smalls and sniper continued to work on the cookies, though if they were cookies really was debatable. Once in a while blink would be sarcastic giving out instructions, and sniper started to learn a little more about the gremlin that lived next to them. It was obvious they were a mess by how un organized their whole dorm was and the fact that they were baking cookies at two in the morning.

Sniper found it funny how them and blink bickered over the phone, and could finally just let loose for the first time in a couple days. She just felt at home with them, though she had only known smalls for around an hour. After awhile Sniper had started to connect the dots.

“Hey are you by chance the person who leaves out cookies in the commons?”

“Oh, uh, yeah i am! But don’t go telling everyone i am, its kinda a secret between me finch and blink.”

“Finch?”

“Sup dude!” a voice yelled from the phone.

“Blinks boyyy frieeend” smalls joked leaning close to the phone.

“Mhh shut up” blink said quietly.

They worked for another hour or so until all of the cookies were baked and out on trays to cool. Once they were done smalls let out a long sigh of relief and plopped down on the couch. Sniper followed them.

“Do you guys do this every week or?” sniper asked trying to fill the silence.

“Not like, every week every week, but yeah every couple days or so.”

Sniper handed smalls her phone.

“Hey, next time you do this come and get me or call me ok smallseth?”

“Sure!” smalls seemed like they were trying to feign indifference but looked ecstatic putting their number in.

After sniper got back to their dorm, she realized what just happened. Looks like im doing this all over again next week.

Everyone else was too tired to even think about making dinner, and decided to just go to bed

You weren’t complaining— you liked having the run of the place

As the two of you were poking around at what you had on hand, Hunk suddenly gasped

At first you thought he had found some gross old leftovers, or maybe got his hand stuck behind something

That is, until he pulled out a box of chips-a-hoy— real, genuine, chip-a-hoy

Apparently on the trip to the space mall recently, he had found them tucked away on the back of a shelf

Needless to say, he grabbed them immediately

And also hid them for good measure, so that the others wouldn’t devour them

“Hey, you wanna try something I used to do at home?”

And that’s how you ended up sitting on the floor of the kitchen, with the biggest bowl you could find filled entirely with cookies and milk

It was sweet, and fun, and was one of the first times you had relaxed in awhile

Also, it was pretty good— and reminded you of home to boot

It was a bit bittersweet that you couldn’t do this after every mission, but you figured that just meant you would have to make sure to enjoy this time as much as you could

Sparkling Cookie, knowing a visitor would come, kept his doors opened a little longer than he usually did. Maybe we was late?

Then, arm-in-arm, two cookies came in. One was much larger than the other, both wore capes, and both were happy.

“Give us a drink, merry young sir!” They sang.

“Are you two okay? Vampire, you don’t normally sing.” Sparkling tilted his head. He then looked over at the taller cookie. “I didn’t expect you to be the type to sing.”

“I love singing!” Fire Spirit indignantly retorted, taking his arm out of Vampire’s to put both hands on his chest. “And I’m pretty great at it too, right?”

“Yeah!” Vampire cheered. 

“You’re right.” Sparkling chuckled. “Anyways, what would you two like?”

“You know. You know, Sparkling. You know what I’d like.” Vampire sat down, a cocky look on his face.

“Oh? You want water? Some water?”

“Wine, dumbass.” The vampire crossed his arms and huffed.

“I’m alright with anything, as long as it’s hot, like you.” Fire Spirit winked.

“No need to flirt, you’re still getting full price. Maybe a kiss, if you’re lucky.”

“But I’m a legendary!”

“Yeah, he’s a legendary! Where’s my wine?” 

“I’m getting to it, and being a legendary doesn’t matter. I still have other standards.” Sparkling grabbed a bottle and started to mix ingredients.

“What’s your standards?”

“I know them! You meet them all.” Vampire pretended to check off standards with his fingers before realizing he doesn’t have any. “Holy fuck... I don’t have fingers.” He started to tear up.

“Hey! It’s okay! None of us have fingers.” Fire Spirit patted Vampire, Sparkling joined in. They brushed hands, but both didn’t react.

“Look, Vampire, it’s your wine!” Sparkling handed it over to Vampire, who instantly started to chug it down. “Now, for your spicy drink...”

“It doesn’t need to be spicy, though that’s great, it just needs to be hot. Nothing cold.”

“What, do you want some warm milk?”

“Warm isn’t good enough. I could drink lava, but nothing warm.”

“Ah! You’re looking for something like that. I don’t have anything of that sort, but I can get you something spicy and a little cold.”

“I guess that’ll work, as long as we get to make out or something afterwards.”

“Alright!” Sparkling began to prepare the drink. 

“Hey, Vampire,” Fire Spirit dropped his voice to a whisper, “what are Sparkling’s standards?”

“I hardly remember them, I just know you meet ALL of them!” Vampire fell out of his chair. “Ow, fuck... That shit hurted...” He slowly got back up.

“It’s done! The drink is finished. No need to talk about my standards, since you’re gonna get a kiss, anyways.” Sparkling handed a drink to both of the cookies. Both started to chug them down (Fire Spirit did go a bit slower, though).

“You ready? I’ve kissed many cookies and all of them loved it.” Fire Spirit put himself on the other side of the counter to be face to face with sparkling. He was slightly hovering to be at a higher height.

“Well, it’s easy to please cookies with low standards,” Sparkling teased.

Instead of replying, Fire Spirit carefully placed his lips against Sparkling, starting a make-out session.

“Get a room!” Vampire Cookie joked before they fell over. He looked over the counter and backed up. 

“Sheesh, couples these days.” Vampire walked out of the bar with whatever wine he could grab.

1. do you have any ocs that are the total opposite of you? any ones that are super similar??

   uhm, most of my oc’s have a lot of myself put into them, if we’re being honest. my insecurities, my health problems, my personality, some part of me that’s deep and buried and is a relief to write about. so, I can say that I relate to a lot of my characters.    Olivia has to be the most like me. The relationship with her sibling, the anger issues, the bad humor, the love for gaudy colors, the need to always be up and moving, the urge to do something with other people.    and for the total opposite, uh, Tommy’s gross and lazy and grumpy and he smokes too much and drinks too much basically is just kind of awful lol

   I will sometimes listen to instrumentals while I write! the DAI soundtrack and Ludovico Einaudi are my go too, but I also like bagpipe metal ~    I make playlists with all genre of music to listen too during “thinking” times though!

   uhhhh heavy drama, with a fantasy element. usually a good romance and a lot of angst mixed in!
